The Career Author Podcast: Episode 135 – Talking with Tara from Kobo

Talking with Tara from Kobo

There’s value in “going wide” and one of the most trusted and thriving marketplaces is Kobo Writing Life. J. and Zach invite Tara Cremin on the show to discuss everything Kobo has to offer the independent author.

We all know what Amazon can offer but exclusivity isn’t the only choice. As an indie, we have the ability to test and adapt quickly, reaching readers in different places and in different ways. Kobo can help you take your writing to the next level with exclusive promotions, international reach, and personalized support services.

Morning guys. Interesting discussion about English speaking in Europe. I taught Engineering in Amsterdam for a few weeks about four year ago and they speak excellent English. Apparently over 90% of the Netherlands speak good English. I have German friends who read novels in English, mainly crime and SciFi and I think over 50% of Germans speak good English.
So how do I plan to take advantage of what Kobo has to offer?
Later this year I’ll be publishing a non-fiction book wide so the tips today from Kobo were really useful. I like the idea of the promotions tab.
    Great show.

Best of luck on the nonfiction, Chris!

Well, loved the show guys! Though for a moment I thought “Ok, so we need to write a new Dot story about her—as an adult—falling for a guy in the Outback?” Haha.
I have a few books on Kobo and I have tried to take advantage of some promos. The free one was good, yet I needed more in that series for it to get traction. I would like to go wide with other books, there is a space opera I have in KU that is actually selling well. But who knows how long it will last. And the next “series” in the pipeline is another space opera. But I have multiple ideas and would love to experiment and try Kobo with those to see how they work. We will see.

Thanks, Lon! Yes, series are definitely easier to market everywhere.

How about an event to see Toronto and visit with Tara and Kobo? Via Rail has trips from Toronto to Montreal, and why not add on The Maritime Way and travel from Montreal to Halifax? Loads to see, and lots of great food. 😉

      Sounds like a great idea!

Will Canada let Americans in right now? Maybe if we go we should stay, eh?

Authors on a Train in Canada. 🙂 I like Janet’s Idea.

My friends said I picked up an English accent when I studied abroad for a year in England. I can’t imagine how Tara sounds to her family when she visits them back home.

I am looking forward to using the dashboard when I take my books wide. Though it is interesting that such a powerful bookseller still requires you to email them to unlock or open things.

I’ve put a few things in Kobo, but am not overextending myself at the moment. By the end of the year I will have 3 more books out and a few associated short stories, so I think as the new year approaches I can focus a bit more on marketing, including Kobo. I did decide to go direct with Kobo instead of through D2D just because I would be able to control promotions.

      That’s probably a good move.
