The Career Author Podcast: Episode 108 – Authors on a Train California 2020

Authors on a Train California 2020

In this special episode coming to you live from J.’s aunt’s kitchen in San Francisco, it’s the Authors on a Train California 2020 round table conversation! After riding the Coastal Starlight train from Los Angeles to Oakland, California, the guys shared a mansion with 12 other amazing writers for 3 days of living together and geeking out on writing. The attendees gathered around the dining room table to talk about the experience with big takeaways on the value of collaboration and in-person events.

The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why there isn’t one right way to collaborate
  • How being fully immersed in an experience can really move the needle
  • What happens when strangers come together under one roof for a common purpose
  • Why virtual events can never be as meaningful as ones in real life

Also, learn how to get a green card if you’re not a United States citizen (joking).

Morning guys and guests. Sounds like you had a great time together; I’m envious.
I like the idea one guest voiced that one learns from reading and writing in different genres. Reading and writing Romance could mean that when one writes Horror one can write with more depth about the relationships between the protagonists to gain more empathy from the reader, before the monster hunts them down one by one in that big house and grounds in Oakland at night, rips their heads off and eats them…
The word investment came up at the end. As an Authors on a Train attendee I can endorse that it is an investment. It is a massive learning experience from J and Zach and from the fellow authors who attend because you learn from their experiences and journeys in writing. It’s a networking event where you meet befriend and work with fellow writers. Over a year after my AOT experience we still help and encourage each other, almost daily in some cases. And it’s fun. Well worth the investment in time and money.
Happy memories. I hope the monster didn’t get all of you, and I hope the posse didn’t come along at the end and shoot the survivors.
    Great show today.

It didn’t quite feel right not having you at an AOT event! Thanks for the comments 😉
